Quality Standards & Ratings
In addition to Underwriters Laboratories' wet location listing, all of Millerbernd's Food Area and Underpass fixtures are IP66 rated. The "IP" stands for ingress protection while the "66" means that a fixture is dust tight and protected against heavy seas and strong jets of water. The IP66 rating is comparable to the NEMA 4 and 4X.  Project Overview: A coastline marina in Alaska was seeking a lighting fixture which provided both a functional and safe solution that could withstand the extreme temperatures, salt water, and moist air. The project’s design engineer heard about Millerbernd's high-performance UP-23 stainless steel underpass fixture and contacted Millerbernd about the possibility of retro-fitting this fixture to withstand the harsh environmental pressures of Alaska and still meet their necessary lighting requirements. Project Solution: As suggested, our lighting team re-engineered the UP-23 as a custom solution to meet the marina's requirements ensuring protection from the extreme Alaska environment and powerful water-jet cleaning. Using UP-23’s high performance and stainless steel construction which met the stringent UL wet and hose down IP66 rating our engineers removed the standard brackets and designed an assembly for easy pole mounting installation while maintaining easy access to its electrical components. Project Result: By effectively separating its internal components from the surrounding environment, the design and construction of the modified UP-23 protects the light fixture from heat, sparking, arcing, dirt, dust, moisture, contaminants, air pressure equalization and other conditions that may adversely affect processes or safety in this marina or other similar environments. This custom fixture was built and installed in Spring 2009; and is ideal solution for similar applications in areas where either transitional or direct light is necessary and corrosive resistant stainless steel is preferred or required.
